The Trigana Air flight IL 267 that crashed in Okbape district in Pegunungan Bintang regency, Papua, on Sunday afternoon, had not only 54 people on board but also Rp 6.5 billion (US$468,000) in cash.

Head of the Jayapura Post Office, Haryono, said the large sum of money was for the prosperous family savings program (PSKS) fund that the Office had planned to distribute to poor families in Pegunungan Bintang.

“There were four officials from our office accompanying the delivery of funds,” said Haryono on Sunday evening as quoted by tempo.co.

Haryono said the Rp 6.5 billion of PSKS funds, provided by the Social Affairs Ministry, was kept in four bags that the four Jayapura Post Office officials took on the flight. The officials were Agustinus Luarmase, MN Aragay, Teguh and Yustinus Hurulean.

“On Trigana’s passenger log, Pak Teguh’s name does not appear, only the name Dewa Putu Raka, who was not on the flight. This is because shortly before his departure, Pak Dewa cancelled his plan to go on the trip and was replaced by another official, Pak Teguh. We have continued to coordinate with Trigana officials and security authorities to follow up this case,” said Haryono.

The ATR 42 aircraft with registration number PK YRN crashed at 2:55 p.m. local time on Sunday while travelling from Jayapura to Oksibil. The crashed aircraft has now been located around 12 miles from Oksibil, the regency’s capital. A joint team comprising Search and Rescue officers and police and military personnel is currently attempting to access the crash site.
