Buni Yani gets 1.5 years in jail

The Bandung District Court in West Java has handed a 1.5-year prison sentence to Buni Yani for spreading hate speech.

The panel of judges, presided over by M. Saptono, read out the verdict at the Archive building on Jl. Seram in Bandung on Tuesday.

Saptono said Buni was found guilty of violating Article 32 of the 2011 Information and Electronic Transactions Law, or Cyber Law.

The sentence was lighter than the prosecutors’ demand for two years.

Citing exacerbating factors, Saptono said Buni had disturbed the peace and Buni had also refused to admit his wrongdoings.

Buni selectively edited a video in which former Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama warned Thousand Islands regency residents about people using Quranic verses for political gain.

The video caused an uproar and resulted in Ahok, a strong contender for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, being found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison on May 9 for defaming Islam.
