Ten people died in a landslide at Pandansari village in Malang district, East Java on Sunday.
“The total number of casualties is at 10. The last victim died at Saiful Anwar Hospital after receiving treatments for his injuries,” Apriliyanto from Malang's Red Cross Office said, adding that seven people remained hospitalized.
The landslide occurred on Sunday at noon. The victims were gathering firewood for a neighbor, who was preparing for his child's wedding reception.
According to a witness, the victims were at the bottom of a steep bank along Nambaan River, when rocks and mud fell, burying them. Nine people died instantly.
Malang district head Rendra Kresna offered his condolences for the victims and promised full assistance for the victims and their families.
“We will cover all medical expenses for the victims,” Rendra said.
