A Thai woman arrested at Ngurah Rai International Airport last year with 308 grams of crystal-methamphetamine hidden in her vagina was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Denpasar District Court on Thursday.
Junporn Ampar, 29, was arrested on November 6, 2010, after arriving in Bali on a flight from Thailand. The drugs were found wrapped in condoms and inserted into her vagina.
“The defendant has been legally and convincingly proven to have committed the illegal act of importing Class I drugs,” said presiding judge Istiningsih Rahayu.
Prosecutors had demanded a 20-year sentence, but Ampar’s guilty plea and expressions of remorse led to a lighter sentence, the judge said.
She had told the court that she had agreed to smuggle the drugs to raise money for medical treatment for her ailing mother.
Ampar’s lawyers said they would not appeal the verdict or the sentence.
