3 in critical condition after falling off train rooftop

Indonesia has come up with another bizarre plan to keep commuters from riding on the roofs of trains: Swat them with brooms drenched in putrid goop. (AP/Achmad Ibrahim)Three rooftop riders fell from a moving economy train on the Jakarta-Bekasi line in Gunung Antang, East Jakarta, on Sunday.

“The accident took place at 1:30 p.m. The three victims, identified as M. Fauji, Waldo and another as yet unidentified, are in critical condition,” said Akhmad Sujadi, head of enforcement with state railway operator PT KAI.

Sujadi said the fare dodgers attempted to climb onto the roof while the train was moving. They hit an electric pole and fell off. The three were taken to Christian University of Indonesia (UKI) Hospital in East Jakarta.

Akhmad was quoted by kompas.com as saying that his company’s records showed that at least six rooftop riders had been injured as of January this year. Four of them died, while two were severely injured.
