JAKARTA: Fire destroyed hundreds of houses in the densely populated Kapuk Muara neighborhood in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, early on Tuesday.
Penjaringan Police precinct said that the fire engulfed a 1.2-hectare area with more than 1,500 residents.
North Jakarta Fire Agency operational division chief Irwan said that the fire was probably caused by an electrical short circuit in one of the houses.
“We assumed that a short circuit led to the explosion of a television set in the house that started the fire,” Irwan was quoted by kompas.com.
At least 24 fire trucks were dispatched to bring the fire under control. The fire, which began to engulf the neighborhood at 2:10 a.m. was extinguished after five hours.
Two people were reportedly injured. The cost of damages has not yet been calculated, according to Irwan.
