More than 120 homes were damaged in Monday’s magnitude 5.9 earthquake off the coast of Malang, East Java, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.
The quake affected homes in soutern Malang, leaving 11 badly damaged and another 113 with moderate or minor damage, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the data chief and spokesman at National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said in a text message on Tuesday.
“There are in total 124 houses damaged,” Sutopo said.
The subdistricts of Dampit, Ampel Gading, Tirto Mulyo, Gedangan and Sumber Manjing Wetan all reported damage. One person was injured while fleeing his home, Sutopo said.
“One person has a broken bone because he was running from the house and fell,” Sutopo said.
The disaster agency did not know how many people had sought shelter with relatives or neighbors.
Sutopo urged people to remain prepared for earthquakes.
“Earthquakes happen suddenly and can not be predicted,” he said. “Every time quakes are felt, it is better to get out of the house quickly and look for a safer place. For people living near the beach, they better to look for higher and safer places.”
