M’sia gets tough on deported Indonesian migrants

Fadli, The Jakarta Post, Batam | Archipelago | Sun, December 08 2013, 11:08 PM

The Malaysian government will use a fingerprint-scanning system for Indonesian migrant workers to establish their migration track record before they can enter the country.

The Biometric Fingerprint Security System is aimed at preventing Indonesian migrant workers already deported by the Malaysian authorities from re-entering the country.

The head of the Indonesian Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), Jumhur Hidayat, said the agency’s officials had met with their Malaysian counterparts to discuss the implementation of the biometric fingerprint system, which is called “bio visa”, for Indonesian migrant workers who wished to work in the country.

He said the Malaysian government would apply the system next year when examining workers’ documents before their departure.

“Personal data on Indonesian migrant workers can help detect whether they are eligible to enter Malaysia before their departure so they will not suffer financial losses,” said Jumhur in Batam.

According to Jumhur, the system aims to prevent deported Indonesian migrant workers from re-entering Malaysia as immigration laws stipulate that people who have been deported are prohibited from re-entering the country for a certain period of time.

“We don’t know exactly when the system will be implemented but it’s likely it will take effect in 2014,” said Jumhur. (ebf)
