The plume of the eruption of Mount Slamet reaching up to 2000 meters
BANYUMAS - Mount Slamet is still on alert status, with the volcano ejecting smoke, gas and dust several times. The highest eruption recorded a plume of gas and dust as high as 1,000-2,000 meters into the air. The incident occurred during the monitoring from-06.00 pm 12.00 pm.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Hendrasto said the eruptions ejected volcanic material in the form of dust. He stated, that bursts were of that hight because of the low frequency that they were occurring.
"If the eruptions are of low frequency, then the power that drives it will be big . Consequently, the higher the burst. However, the observations of the eruptions were hampered due to thick fog on the site.," said Hendrasto, today.
Hendrasto revealed, monitoring conducted by PVMBG six hours earlier, at 00.00 am until 06.00 am, that the mountain erupted 10 times with thick gray smoke with a maximum altitude of 1,500 meters. The plume of the eruption drifted to the northwest.
Meanwhile, the head of the field of energy resources and mineral resources of groundwater Office of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Banyumas, Sigit Widiadi suggests, the eruptions occurring at Mount Slamet, generally takes place within a few days to several weeks.
"Mount Slamet’s character of explosive eruptions tend to be weak (type volcano) and also effusive meaning the lava flow and ash eruptions are usually accompanied by scoria (type Stromboli)," he wrote in a release note we received.
Based on the type, he explained, the depth of the magma chamber of Mount Slamet was shallow. "Banyumas Energy and Mineral Resources Bureau data shows the depth of the magma chamber of Mount Slamet to be no more than 5 miles or less than 10 kilometers," he said.
