Jakarta. Jakarta Police have taken over the extortion case against foreigners and migrant workers at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, initiated an investigation into the issue over the weekend and detained at least 18 people.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that after the arrest, police will be looking into records of the closed circuit television (CCTV) at the airport to more thoroughly investigate the illegal practice.
“The next step is for investigators to check CCTV [footage] at the location where the transactions or extortions against migrant workers are believed to have taken place, allegedly carried out by soldiers and police officers as well as illegal taxi drivers,” Rikwanto said on Sunday.
The KPK on Friday and Saturday nabbed up to 18 people — a soldier, two police officers and 15 drivers operating taxis illegally — alleged to have extorted money from foreigners and migrant workers at the airport.
The soldiers and officers allegedly forced foreign visitors and migrant workers to pay fees of up to $250 for “taxi fares,” which they would subsequently split with the taxi drivers.
Officials have identified the two police officers as W.D. and E.T.
“There are two police officers. We will process both their crime and ethical violations [and look into] whether or not they are still worthy of serving as police officers,” National Police chief Gen. Sutarman said on Monday following the early morning Eid prayer.
Sutarman said both officers are at risk of being removed from duty should the accusations be proven true.
Meanwhile, the soldier, identified as R.S., has reportedly been handed over to the military, although no comments have been made on whether the soldier would be sanctioned.
Separately, the 15 drivers have reporedly been released due to a lack of evidence to charge them, but Sutarman vowed the case would continue.
“We have to send them home, but we’ve obliged them to report regularly and write a statement [that they would not repeat the practice],” Rikwanto said.
Rikwanto has also called on the victims of the case to file reports to the police.
