Jakarta. In a YouTube video uploaded on Dec. 24, an Indonesian national fighting in the Middle East warns the nation’s security forces that the Islamic State movement is happy to “slaughter” them “one by one” as part of its attempt to implement Shariah law in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation state.
“We’ve heard that you want to help the coalition forces, to eliminate the Caliphate. But know that we are truly happy to hear this. Because this means that, God willing, the meeting between you and us will be expedited by God,” a man says in Indonesian in the 4.01-minute long YouTube clip.
“And if you don’t come to us, we will come to you. We will come back to Indonesia … to implement the Shariah of God. The implementation of the Shariah of God starts with waging a war on you — with slaughtering you one by one — the [Indonesian] military, the National Police, Densus [88] and Banser.”
Banser is the security wing of Nahdlatul Ulama, the country’s biggest Islamic organization, which is known for helping secure churches during Christian holidays and mosques of minority Muslim groups under threat. Densus 88 is the elite antiterror unit of the National Police.
‘In Syria since March’
A source within Densus 88 told the Jakarta Globe on condition of anonymity that the man in the clip is Abu Jandal, also known as Salim Mubarok Attamimi.
“This is the guy. Salim has been in Syria since March 2014. Hundreds of Indonesian citizens have already joined ISIS,” the source said on Friday.
Salim is from Malang in East Java, but before moving there he lived in Surabaya’s Kampung Ampel area, which is home to many Indonesians of Arab descent.
Intelligence officials say at least 300 Indonesians are fighting with IS, but the movement continues to attract people.
A group of 12 Indonesians, including nine women and children, were detained in Malaysia last week as they tried to depart for Syria, allegedly to join IS. Police say the group’s trip was financed by a convicted terrorist. They were sent back to Indonesia and all but one man have been released.
The man being held, Muhammad Shibghotullah, is a convicted bank robber and is suspected of having harbored a number of wanted terrorists, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Ronnie F. Sompie said on Wednesday.
‘America on your side’
In the YouTube clip, Salim specifically mentions Gen. Moeldoko, the commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), saying that he is “cursed by God” (laknatullah).
It is not the first time that Salim appears in a YouTube video claiming to speak on behalf of IS. In June he called on people to defend their fellow Muslims from the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria.
In his new video message, Salim criticizes the Indonesian police and military for defending Indonesia and its state ideology, Pancasila, arguing they should instead put their faith in God.
“We only ask for the help of God Almighty, while you are proud of having America on your side,” Salim says, adding that “the soldiers of God are waiting for you.”
Indonesia has declared IS a terrorist organization and has banned the dissemination of its ideology in the archipelago.
John Kerry, the US secretary of state, reportedly has urged Indonesia as well as other countries in the region to step up the fight against IS, but so far there are no indications that Indonesia is considering to actively contribute to the US-led coalition that is bombing IS targets in Iraq and Syria.
The YouTube clip is titled “Ancaman wahabi terhadap Polisi, TNI dan Densus 88, Banser,” or “Wahabi threat against the Police, TNI and Densus, Banser.”
