Bogor. Four died and 21 were injured when a tree collapsed on a group of people in Bogor’s famous Botanical Gardens.
Witnesses said the old tree suddenly collapsed at 10 a.m. on Sunday, when a group of workers was sitting under it.
“The workers were gathering, discussing the regional minimum wage, when suddenly the tree just came down,” Yudi Wahyudi, a witness and co-worker of the victims, told the Jakarta Globe at the Indonesian Red Cross Hospital in the West Java city, where the injured were taken.
Yudi said he heard cracking noises before the tree fell on his friends, trapping them underneath.
Bogor officials did not immediately issue a statement regarding the incident.
The 87-hectare Bogor Botanical Gardens were established in the 19th century and host a wide variety of plants and trees. The gardens are among Indonesia’s prime tourist destinations.
