The Indonesian Military (TNI) will pay compensation to all civilian victims who were killed in the Air Force’s Hercules C-130 tragedy in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday.
TNI spokesman Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya said in Jakarta on Saturday that compensation would be paid only to the civilian victims and not to servicemen killed in the accident.
“The compensation will be paid only to relatives of servicemen who were killed in the accident,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
He said, however, that the TNI was still assessing the amount of compensation that would be paid to the civilian victims.
Fuad said soldiers killed in the accident would obtain compensation from state-owned social security program for servicemen PT ASABRI.
“The TNI has never insured civilian passengers. All servicemen are registered with PT ASABRI under the occupation accident benefit scheme,” he said.
The ill-fated Hercules C-130 cargo aircraft crashed into a housing area in Medan Tuntungan in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday, killing 38 soldiers, 83 civilian passengers and eight local residents.
