Solo holds endangered animals exhibition

Dozens of local endangered species were displayed recently at a public exhibition in President’s Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s hometown of Surakarta (Solo), in Central Java. Located at Balekambang Park, the exhibition was entitled, Endangered Animals Festival.

“Protected animals at the exhibition included Bali starlings, great palm cockatoos, yellow-crested cockatoos, eclectus parrots and rare reptiles,” said Suharman of Central Java’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).

Of all the animals bred by Balekambang Park Management in cooperation with Megaland Hotel, the Bali starling attracted the largest number of visitors. The bird chirped beautifully while being displayed in front of the main entrance to the exhibition.

“The Bali starling is categorized as a bird that is native to Bali. However, we have bred them outside Bali. Even now, there is a breeding center for them abroad,” Suharman told the thejakartapost.com on Sunday.

The festival aimed to introduce endangered species to the public and to promote the importance of protecting them.

Dwi Anggoro, a member of the festival’s steering committee, said the festival also aimed to educate the public on the importance of preserving aquatic species and protecting their ecosystem.

“We call on the public to hand over to the authorities any endangered animal that they are presently keeping. They are allowed to keep it if they have a permit. We’re happy to help them get a permit,” Dwi said. (ags)
