BANDA ACEH: The Aceh government has supported the proposal for designating Nov. 5 as World Tsunami Day, the province’s Governor Zaini Abdullah has said.
“We support the idea of making Nov. 5 World Tsunami Day and hope that the United Nations will approve the proposal,” he said.
Zaini said Nov. 5 was the most fitting date for World Tsunami Day. The date is taken from a tsunami that hit Japan 160 years ago.
During the tsunami, there was an effort to light a fire on a hill so that people could see what was coming and run away before being hit by the huge wave.
“We hope that a future World Tsunami Day will encourage people to care about disasters and to share their knowledge of how to respond to tsunamis,” Zaini said.
Aceh, he said, experienced a similar situation on Dec. 26, 2004 when a massive tsunami killed more than 130,000 people in the province.
Japan-Indonesia Parliamentary League chairman Toshihiro Nikai and an entourage from the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia visited Aceh on Thursday and held a meeting with Zaini.
Nikai disclosed the plan by Indonesia and Japan to propose World Tsunami Day on Nov. 5.
