Philatelists can now add to their stamp collections as the Bogor Botanical Gardens’ Plant Conservation Center and state-owned postal firm PT Pos Indonesia have launched a new stamp series of orchid species from 34 Indonesian provinces.
The new stamp series was launched to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Bogor Botanical Gardens.
Pos Indonesia consignment and philately vice president Munawar Ainy said the stamp series was released on May 18, coinciding with the park’s anniversary celebrations.
The stamps carrying pictures of the 34 orchid species are sold for Rp 130,000 (US$9.75) per set.
One of orchid species illustrated in the new series is the Coelogyne Marthae, an endemic orchid species. Coelogyne Marthae was discovered by Bogor Botanical Gardens researchers in Katingan, Central Kalimantan, in 2013.
“We will donate 10 percent of the revenues from the sales to fund further conservation research,” said Munawar.
Bogor Botanical Gardens head Didik Widyatmoko said one of conservation efforts conducted by the park was to document Indonesian orchid species through the issuance of the new stamps. These orchids are all rare and endemic species.
“The orchid stamp series was initiated by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who inaugurated the House of Indonesian Orchids at the Bogor Botanical Gardens in 2002,” said Didik.
