Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors have demanded that corruption defendant and non-active Klaten regent Sri Hartini be sentenced to 12 years in prison. Sri has been indicted for allegedly receiving millions of rupiah in bribes and unlawful gifts from school principals and village heads in the regency.
The prosecutors have also demanded that the judges at the Semarang Corruption Court in Central Java order Sri to pay Rp 1 billion (US$75,000) in fines or serve an additional 1 year in prison.
Prosecutor Afni Carolina told the court on Monday that Sri had allegedly received a series of bribes totaling Rp 2.9 billion from principals and teachers who wanted promotions. The non-active regent also allegedly received Rp 9.8 billion in gratuities.
Sri was elected during the simultaneous regional elections in December 2015. A year later, KPK investigators arrested her in Klaten, Central Java.
The trial has been adjourned until next week, when Sri is slated to read out her defense plea.
Another defendant in the case, former Klaten Education Agency official Suramlan, has been sentenced to 1 year and eight months in prison for giving Rp 200 million in bribes to Sri.
