A tornado hit Kelapa Dua Island in Jakarta's Thousand Islands regency on Tuesday night, leaving 21 houses damaged and resulting in dozens of trees collapsing.
The tornado came with strong winds during a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall at around 8 p.m., Kelapa Dua Island subdistrict head Fadli said on Wednesday.
"A home that belonged to a resident, Dadang, was shifted and flipped over, while 20 other homes were severely damaged," Fadli said as quoted by kompas.com.
Workers from the Public Facility Maintenance Agency (PPSU) helped the residents clean up the wreckage from their houses.
"The residents suffered estimated losses upwards of hundreds of millions of rupiah because of the incident," Fadli said.
Last month, three waterspouts were spotted in waters off the Thousand Islands, a phenomenon rarely seen in the tropics, the National Mitigation Agency reported.
The waterspouts were seen near Opak Island, an uninhabited isle situated close to Kaliage Island.
