West Java Police arrested a 32-year-old woman for allegedly torturing her 7-year-old son by burning him with an iron in Lebakagung village, Garut regency.
The case came to light after the alleged victim reportedly provided an account of the abuse to his teacher. The teacher then reported the case to the authorities, who immediately followed up on the report.
Garut Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Budi Satria Wiguna said the alleged victim’s mother was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.
“In the meantime, the child is being treated at Dr. Slamet Hospital,” Budi said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.
Budi said his side was investigating the case, however, the suspect had until now refused to speak with investigators.
"She is not mentally disturbed, but she was still in shock because we arrested her,” he added.
Budi said the suspect may be charged under Article76C of Law No. 35/2014 on child abuse, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment. (hol/dmr)
