Legal 'Becak' drivers demand enforcement of sticker policy

Several becak (pedicab) drivers in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, who have obtained city administration logos on their vehicles, demanded the administration prohibit those without stickers.

“We’ve talked with officers of the Satpol PP [Jakarta Public Order Agency]. They said we’re the legal becak drivers who are allowed to operate on narrow roads. We will not be caught in the sweep,” said Karmo, a becak driver, as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.

The city administration had only issued 180 stickers, Karmo added, but now he noticed there were around 300 becak operating in the area.

“Well, it’s a fact that once becak is allowed to operate again, there’ll be more becak coming from outside Jakarta to operate here in the city,” he said.

Karmo’s fellow becak driver, Sohibin, who had a sticker, said he looked forward to the city administration getting rid of the illegal becak drivers. He said there were too many becak and that it could make it hard to get passengers. (vla)
