Majority of villages in NTT still don't have electricity

A greater part of the villages in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) are still gripped with poverty as more than 1,627 villages across 62 districts have no access to electricity.

"NTT is home to 2,577 villages, most of which are still deprived of power services. This is one of the reasons for the slow economic growth in the villages," said NTT Governor Frans Leburaya in a seminar on renewable energy development in Kupang on Thursday.

According to him, NTT with 566 islands, has various potential sources of renewable energy that have yet to be exploited to their maximum potential.

"We have vast potential for micro-hydropower energy on Sumba, Flores and Timor islands, geothermal energy on Flores, Lembata and Alor islands, and wind and solar energy available throughout the year. These potential sources of renewable energies have yet to be developed to their maximum potential," he said.

Leburaya expressed hope the application of renewable energy sources would help overcome the underdevelopment of electricity supplies in the region.

"The expectation is in line with a 2006 presidential decree, which insists on the use of new and renewable energy sources by 2025, in line with the national energy amalgamation of 1.4 percent," he added.

The general manager of the NTT state power company PT PLN, S. Januwarsono, said harsh geographical conditions and a less organized settlement pattern were among the main factors causing the delay of power services in the region.

"This has caused the electricity grid system to become isolated. Developing such a system requires a lot of diesel power generators, unconnected distribution network and huge operational costs," said Junuwarsono.

NTT is ranked the lowest in terms of the national electrification ratio at only 32 percent, or below the national average of 50 percent, due to its harsh geographical conditions.

NTT Deputy Legislative Speaker Nelson Matara said his office expected PLN to meet people's demand for power in the future.

"The private sector and the public should cooperate to develop renewable energy sources to meet the increasing demand for electricity every year," said Matara.

Meanwhile, more than half of the residents in Majenang, Cilacap regency in Central Java, do not have access to electricity because of their remote geographical location.

Majenang district secretary Sadmoko said that of 31,664 houses in the district, only 14,707 houses had received electricity from the state electricity company PLN.

"The rest still use kerosene lamps. It's sad. Hopefully, it will not last long," he said.

Sadmoko said that PLN had not reached the houses since they were located in mountainous areas, which were prone to landslides.

"Transportation is still difficult here. So it's challenging to install electricity," he added.

"Landslides occurs almost every year. So it's dangerous to setup the electricity installation," he said.

Sadmoko said the regency administration planned to install electricity in a number of villages next year.

But, he said, only three of the 17 villages in the district would be included in the installation project.

He said the administration was prioritizing the development of access areas, such as building roads and bridges, to make way for the electricity project.

Majenang is located in the western part of Cilacap.

The district is the designated capital of West Cilacap regency if Cilacap is split into two separate regencies.
