FPI dissolves training for transvestites
Dozens of Islamic Defender Front (FPI) activists stormed into a hotel in Depok, West Java on Friday to dissolve a human rights training program for transvestites from across the country.
The raid took place as 26 participants of the program were attending a class delivered by a National Commission on Human Rights instructor, kompas.com reported.
“Suddenly the door was smashed, the glasses were tossed around and people started to call for God’s help,” Seruni, a participant from Jakarta, said.
The rights body evacuated all the participants from the hotel to the commission’s office in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
“What mistake did we commit? We learned bout human rights in order to defend our rights as a minority group,” another participant, Nadine, said, adding that five police officers who were in the hotel during the raid did nothing to prevent the attackers.
.
“Perhaps they [attackers] thought we would hold a pageantry contest,” Nadine said.
The training is scheduled to finish on Saturday, but following the incident the rights commission has not yet decided whether to continue the program.
