Jakarta Police traffic officers collected Wednesday a kilogram of nails which had been scattered along Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta, during a regular street inspection aimed at reducing motor accidents.
“This morning, we drove slowly down the street for an hour and found one kilogram of nails of various sizes,” traffic police officer Adj. Second. Insp. Ganda Aritonang said.
Ganda called on motorists to report incidents of people depositing nails on streets to the city police’s Traffic Management Center immediately, by calling 021-5276001 or by text message to 1717.
Often called road land mines, nails and other sharp objects are frequently scattered on streets by people looking to profit from punctured tires.
The police said 13 main thoroughfares in the capital were frequently found to have sharp objects scattered on them.
In South Jakarta, these areas include the Permata Hijau flyover heading to Pondok Indah, Jl. Teuku Nyak Arif, Jl. Prof Dr. Satrio and the tunnels along Jl. Casablanca.
