A Central Java court has upheld a verdict sentencing notorious Islamic cleric Pujiono Cahyo Widianto to four years’ imprisonment for marrying a 12-year-old girl.
The Ungaran District Court previously convicted the cleric, also known as Syekh Puji, of violating the Child Protection Law after he married Lutfiana Ulfa in 2009.
“The appeal is turned down. The verdict will revert to the verdict of the Ungaran District Court,” presiding judge Soedarmadji said on Tuesday.
Syekh Puji was also guilty of violating the Child Protection Law, Soedarmadji added as reported by tribunnews.com.
The cleric was also ordered to pay a Rp 60 million (US$6,840) fine.
