Family of Papua shooting victims demand Rp 2b in compensation
The Jakarta Post,
The family of two victims allegedly shot dead by police have demanded police pay Rp 1 billion (US$116,000) in compensation for each life taken, besides punishing the perpetrators.
Dominiku Auwe and Aloysius Waine were allegedly shot dead in the Papua regency of Dogiyai on Apr. 13.
“Two nephews of mine were shot without warning,” the victim's uncle, Markus Waine, said in Jayapura on Wednesday.
Dominokus was reportedly shot in the chest and head, and Aloysius was shot in the chest.
According to traditions, lives taken must be repaid with lives, so compensation alone will not settle the problem, Markus said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
"We want maximum punishment for the perpetrators. Killing people is a violation of human rights,” he said.
He suggested the killings may have been related to police involvement in a gambling racket in the area.
