SAMARINDA: Twenty-one villages were engulfed by floods in Muara Kaman district, Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan, as of Friday. Muara Kaman Ilir village was the worst-hit, with floodwaters reaching up to 3 meters high.
The worsening floods have prompted schools in the village to temporarily close.
SDN 027 state elementary school principal Basruni said he was forced to close the school because the bridge usually used by students to cross the river was submerged by floodwaters.
“We don’t want to put the students at risk of drowning when they cross the bridge. We have put students on leave, especially first to third graders,” Basruni said. — JP
