More than 400 people are homeless after a fire destroyed 63 homes in Bunga Eja Beru neighborhood, Tallo subdistrict, Makassar, on Wednesday.
The inferno began around 2 p.m., reportedly triggered by a short-circuit in a home workshop containing flammable materials used to make chairs, Makassar Fire and Disaster Mitigation Agency chief Hakim Syahrani said.
The combination of strong winds combined with the tightly packed neighborhood made it difficult to extinguish the fire.
Syamsia, a local resident, said the fire spread very quickly.
The Makassar Fire Department deployed 20 fire engines to fight the blaze, extinguishing the fire about two hours later.
Tallo subdistrict head Muhammad Mario Said said that losses might run into billions of rupiah.
