Twelve Indonesian abattoirs have been banned from slaughtering Australian cattle due to their violations of animal welfare principles.
"Australia will not stop its exports to Indonesia, except in the case of those 12 abattoirs," Agriculture Ministry livestock department chief Prabowo Respatiyo Caturroso told news portal Detik.com. "The 12 banned slaughterhouses will receive training from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Indonesian Council of Ulema [MUI], the Indonesian Meat Producers and Feedlot Association [Apfindo] and Meat & Livestock Australia."
Prabowo said all abattoirs in the country will be directly monitored by the government in coordination with Apfindo, to ensure that animal welfare principles are adhered to.
"We will push the idea of stunning cattle [before they are slaughtered] and we will cooperate with the MLA to install electric stunners in abattoirs," he said.
According to Joni Liano, executive director of Apfindo, the 12 blacklisted slaughterhouses are:
1. Bayur in Tangerang, Banten
