The Health Ministry estimated on Monday that some 30 million Indonesians were hepatitis B and C-positive.
“Half of [the hepatitis strains] are chronic and 10 percent get worse and become liver cancer,” Health Ministry Director General Tjandra Yoga Adhitama said in a press release.
Indonesia ranks third in the world after India and China for the number of people infected with hepatitis.
He said the government was trying to reduce the number of people infected with hepatitis by promotional, preventive and curative measures such as immunizing babies.
