Indonesia’s self-appointed morality police, the Islamic Defenders Front, have launched raids against the country’s largest prostitution complex and an area popular for its restaurants and bars.
The raids in Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java, came despite assurance from the police that they were prepared for the illegal raids by the vigilantes, also known as the FPI.
Following raids in Makassar, South Sulawesi, at the beginning of the month, the FPI raided the infamous Dolly red-light district on Thursday.
Members of the group, which has often been accused of stand-over tactics, demanded that brothel owners close for Ramadan.
The FPI then moved on to the Jalan Diponegoro entertainment area, home to a number of bars, including the popular Rasa Sayang Cafe, to deliver the same demands.
There was a heavy police presence and no violence was reported.
( about time they deported this FPI crowd to their Wahabi cousins in Saudi Arabia!)
