According to Jakarta Sanitation Agency, at least 1.9 million tonnes of waste was produced in Jakarta on the eve of Idul Fitri, far less than the 2.8 tonnes anticipated.
Agency chief Eko Bharuna said 350 workers had been employed in the 12-hour cleanup job that ended Wednesday afternoon.
"The rubbish collected was immediately hauled off to Bantar Gebang landfill in Bekasi. That amount does not include the rubbish collected from tourist attraction such as Ancol, Ragunan Zoo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah and the National Monument," Eko said Thursday.
He added that the area that produced the largest amount of waste had been South Jakarta, with 569.7 tonnes, followed by East Jakarta with 380.6 tonnes, Central Jakarta with 362.7 tonnes, North Jakarta with 275.1 tonnes and West Jakarta with 139.4 tonnes.
"We prepared 350 extra cleaners in each area, in addition to the 150 already in each area [...] These cleaners were sent to work at the 726 mosques and fields where the Ied prayers were conducted. We also prepared 648 trucks to collect the rubbish," Eko said as reported by tribunnews.com.
