A union leader says Indonesian security forces opened fire on striking workers at Freeport-McMoran's gold and copper mine, killing one and critically wounding another.
Police said Monday it was too early to comment and Freeport officials were preparing an official statement.
Workers at the Grasberg mine in easternmost Papua province kicked off a strike on Sept. 15, demanding pay increases from the current $2.10 to $3.50 an hour to $17.50 to $43.
About 90 percent of the mine's 12,000 employees are taking part.
Union leader Manuel Maniambo said the shooting occurred Monday morning as striking workers headed to the mine to try stop replacement workers.
One worker was killed and the other was hospitalized in critical condition.
