Flash floods battered six districts in the Pesisir Selatan regency, West Sumatra, on Thursday, killing four and inundating hundreds of homes.
The floods raged through the districts of Ranah Pasisir, Lengayang, Sutera, Lenggo Sari Baganti, Pancu Soal and Batang Kapas at 1 a.m. after heavy rain had caused rivers near these areas to overflow, Antara state-run news agency reported.
“The search and rescue team have evacuated three victims, identified as Isnaidarni, 40, Naisya, 8, and Santia, 22, in Lengayang,” said Suryadi from the West Sumatra Disaster Management Agency.
“The team is identifying another victim in Ranah Pasisir,” he added.
Among the six districts, Lengayang, Ranah Pasisir, Batang Kapas and Sutera were badly hampered by the floods.
Suryadi reported that at least seven houses in Lengayan, Sutera and Batang Kapas had been swept away and eight houses badly damaged.
The main road connecting coastal areas of South Sumatra in Lengayan was also inundated, breaking off all road access.
Suryadi said that the floods had reached a height of two-meters but receded to one meter after a few hours.
He said that the rescue team was still evacuating people from their flooded homes.
