For the fourth time in a little over a month, a bridge has fallen, this time in North Jakarta. Part of a bridge under construction linking Marunda to Cilincing collapsed in the early hours of Sunday. There were no casualties.
Six precast concrete beams that had just been installed, each more than 30 meters long, 1.6 meters thick and 0.7 meters wide, fell about five meters.
Onasis Chelerides, field manager of the bridge’s contractor, Bunga Tanjung Raya, said all six parallel beams collapsed as the sixth one was being installed.
“When the sling was released from the beam, it suddenly went to one side and hit the neighboring beam, causing all six beams to fall,” Onasis said.
He speculated that the beams were not strong enough to resist the load because they had not been cured long enough, and he estimated that the accident would cost Rp 750 million ($83,000).
Ery Basworo, the head of Jakarta’s Public Works Office said the construction contractor will fully bear the losses.
“We instructed the contractor to clean up the collapsed beams and replace them with new ones,” Ery said.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, who visited the site, said the contractor was responsible for the incident and “should repair the bridge with the same quality and on time as scheduled.”
Other concrete beams that have yet to be installed will be inspected to ensure that they meet specifications, Fauzi added.
The project was expected to be completed by May 2012, Ery said.
The bridge collapse in Jakarta followed the collapse a 10-year-old suspension bridge in Kutai Kartanegara district, East Kalimantan, on Nov. 26 that killed at least 21 people.
Some 39 people were injured during the accident, while the whereabouts of 15 are still unknown. They are believed to have perished in the incident.
Another bridge, a 15-year-old, 50-meter concrete span over the Balim Pike River in Wamena, Papua, collapsed on Thursday but was not severed. The bridge’s midsection fell to the level of the water, but pedestrians and motorcyclists were still allowed to use it.
Earlier in November, a Rp 900 million bridge in South Sumatra connecting the villages of Bandarjaya and Sungai Putih also collapsed. Three months before that, the larger, Rp 21.4 billion Ulak Kembang bridge collapsed, resulting in two deaths.
On Sunday near the fallen Mahakam II bridge in East Kalimantan, six traditional divers continued to look for cars and any victims trapped inside them. They began their search after the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) halted its own search efforts on Saturday.
Ramli, one of the divers, said they could dive up to 40 meters below the river’s surface but added that the water current underneath was strong.

This is getting ridiculous... Does Indonesia have a history of collapsing bridges/ shoddy architecture prior to Nov. 2011?
At any rate, they're going to have to investigate this.

Depending on from what side you look through the window the fingers always seem to point to someone else as far as responsibility is concerned bro A-A. so nothing new realy, just read the following out of the JG.
Faulty Crane Gets Blame For Collapse in N. Jakarta.
December 12, 2011
North Jakarta Police say negligence is to blame for the collapse of the Marunda bridge early on Sunday morning.
Five concrete girders comprising a section of the bridge toppled over as a sixth was being put into place by crane.
The bridge was being built in North Jakarta to link Jalan Bulak Cabe with the Kampung Sawah area along Jalan Arteri Marunda.
Police spokesman Comr. Maskur Bujang Chaniago said on Monday that two witnesses were being interviewed by the police.
“Salam, the foreman, and Kandi, the crane operator, are still being investigated,” he said.
Maskur said the cause of the collapse seemed to be a problem with the crane’s setup.
“One of the crane’s bearings was not in compliance with the original specifications,” he said, “which contributed to the concrete beams falling.”
He said the police believed the crane was wobbling because of the unstable bearings, causing the sixth concrete beam to crash into the other beams that were already in place.
Standard crane bearings include rubber cushions that are 50 to 60 centimeters in diameter, but the crane involved in the accident had at least one bearing that was too small, only 30 centimeters.
It is believed the crane’s swaying set off a domino effect, causing the five 30-meter-long concrete beams to come crashing down from their 10-meter-high support pylons.
Each of the precast girders weighed around 54 tons and cost Rp 110 million ($12,000). They will need to be replaced, which will set back the construction and cost more than half a billion rupiah in a project that had been budgeted for Rp 17.7 billion.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo inspected the accident scene on Sunday and said the contractor, Bunga Tanjung Raya, would be responsible for redoing the work at its own expense.

Kijk even naar Nederland: Heerlen, Het Loon.
(moest ik even kwijt).

Ha die bro Konijn! If you realy want to know the chain of responsibility you'll have to start at the top, the Ministry of Pub. Works, they have quantity and quality surveyors who "supposedly" are to keep an eye on the contractor and on that same level are the achitects who specified the materials to be used, these checks are to be frequent , progress reports with other words, than comes the contractor with their project manager, supply managers, supervisors and what have you and there is where the buck stops before it travels back up the line! Perhaps just as well that this bridge caved in, imagine what would have happened if it would have come down with loads of people on it h`e, any case no worries about all the mishaps elsewhere, those are sad, but what happens there did not happen in Indonesia, what all this news is all about? maaf ya? siK
