Three people died after a flood of volcanic material from Mount Gamalama in Ternate, North Maluku, hit several villages located on the slopes of the volcano on Tuesday.
Presidential special staff Andi Arief said Wednesday that the cold lava floods had destroyed several houses in Tubo and Tofure villages.
“Initial data cited that three people died, while many other residents evacuated to a school building and the former North Maluku governor's office,” Andi said in a statement.
Andi said the cold lava flood also hit Togorara and Marikurubu rivers, destroying several houses along the riverbanks.
The status of Mt. Gamalama, which erupted on Dec. 4, has been increased to alert level 3, on a scale of four levels. (swd)
