Some 87 prisoners from the Kerobokan Prison in the resort island of Bali have been transferred to several prisons in East Java, following two riots in the prison earlier this week.
“We have been appointed by the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s director general for penitentiaries to accept 87 inmates from Kerobokan,” Law and Human Rights Ministry’s East Java chapter chief Mashudi said on Saturday in Surabaya, East Java.
The prisoners, 11 of whom are women, arrived in Banyuwangi on Friday evening and will be transferred to a number of penitentiaries in the province.
“The female inmates will be transferred to the women's prison in Malang while the others will be transferred to Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, Jember, Porong and Surabaya,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that 15 wardens had been deployed to secure the transfer process.
“We have also coordinated with the local police,” he noted.
The riots in the Kerobokan Prison broke out after some inmates were involved in a stabbing incident. Some 60 foreign inmates have been transferred to several prisons in Bali. (swd)
