Police Probe Surabaya Elevator Mishap
February 27, 2012
Police in Surabaya are investigating an incident in which 17 people got trapped inside an elevator for two hours on Sunday.
Comr. Budi Santoso, chief of the Genteng subprecinct police, said the elevator at the Empire Palace building was supposed to be out of service at the time for repairs.
“We’re talking to the building managers and technicians to find out who turned it on and why,” he said.
Seventeen people got trapped inside the elevator at about 10 a.m. on Sunday. The air-conditioning also died minutes later.
They attempted to call for help by pressing the emergency and phone buttons, but these were not working.
They were finally rescued two hours later when technicians cut a hole in the roof of the elevator to pull them out one by one.
Budi said the police would question building managers about the lack of contingency plans.
