Pamekasan police officers shot dead Asdiman, 50, a resident of Bujur Barat, Pamekasan, East Java, who apparently ran amok on Monday.
The police said they had to shoot Asdiman, who was reportedly mentally ill, because he went on a rampage with a sharp object, injuring a police officer and two residents.
The injured were identified as Giman, Aiptu M. Taufiqurrahman, 45, and his wife, Asbeti, 37.
Taufiqurrahman suffered a 15-centimeter cut and received 10 stitches, while Giman suffered 13 cuts and Asbeti had bruises all over her body.
“We asked the perpetrator to surrender but he fought back with a sickle,” Pamekasan Police Chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Nanang Chadarusman said as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the police talked with the Bujur Barat village leader and local residents before firing at Asdiman.
“One of the police officers shot him in his thigh, leg, and hand, but he still escaped and hid in a nearby house,” Nanang said.
According to Nanang, Asdiman was still struggling when the police tried to arrest him. He died on the way to Slamet Martodirdjo Hospital.
