Bird flu has infected hundreds of fowl in Bengkulu, Sumatra, and is spreading to neighboring areas.
"Bird flu has contaminated at least three regions, the first is Bengkulu City, the Sukaraja sub-district and the other is Seluma regency, which is about 20 kilometers north of Bengkulu city," Bengkulu Province Bird Flu Response Coordinator Emran Kuswady said, as reported by Antara news agency on Sunday.
He said that to date, seven chickens were identified virus carriers in Bengkulu City.
"We’ve been able to spot the infected poultry thanks to the efficient response of the bird flu response team," said Hauliantua Pohan, a Bengkulu husbandry agency official.
He said that the bird flu-positive chickens were identified after officials in the region examined their carcasses several days ago.
Emran said that residents should bring their livestock to nearby husbandry agency officials for examination, so that infected chickens could be put down to help stop the virus from spreading
