Setiabudi Police chief detective Adj. Comr. Riftajudin said the Dutch man who had set himself on fire in front of the Dutch Embassy, had been moved to Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP) in South Jakarta on Friday evening.
“Albert has been moved to RSPP because [Medistra Hospital] has a shortage of equipment,” Riftajudin said.
Albert Johannis Cornelis was taken from Medistra Hospital in Kuningan, South Jakarta, at around 6 p.m. He suffered burns to 90 percent of his body.
Citing information from eyewitnesses, Riftajudin said Cornelis had thrown gasoline over his body before setting himself on fire at about 2 p.m. on a small road outside the embassy building on Jalan Rasuna Said in Kuningan.
He then ran into the embassy complex via a door commonly used by visa applicants.
“Based on information that the police have gathered, Albert had reportedly often come to the Dutch Embassy to ask for a job,” Riftajudin said.
Police have secured Cornelis’ small backpack, which was charred. Police found Rp 15,000 ($1.60), an umbrella and a Nokia cell phone, among other items inside of it.
Riftajudin said police were still investigating the motive of the self-immolation.
“He purely wanted to commit a suicide as he had brought along a bottle of gasoline with him,” Riftajudin said.
