Five people were shot, and 12 homes were burned down in a fierce armed battle between two villages in East Lampung on Friday.
The battle between two villages, Umbul Tebu and Pematang Halo of the Jabung district, was triggered over street justice linked to a motorcycle robbery. “Hundreds of villagers from Umbul Tebu attacked with homemade weapons,” said Iwan Setiawan, a resident of Pematang Halo, over the telephone.
Villagers of Pematang Halo who were attacked attempted to rescue themselves but failed. Five villagers were shot. They were rushed to the Abdul Muluk hospital. Among the wounds sustained were those in the stomach, chest and arms.
The battle which ensued at 3pm were only secured by police two hours later. Security conditions in both villages, separated by just two kilometres of road, remain tense.
