A new bridge, the construction of which was just completed a week ago, collapsed in the South Sulawesi district of East Luwu on Wednesday, killing a 5-year-old boy.
The incident took place at 4 p.m., when about 100 people lined up along the 45-meter-long bridge to watch a traditional boat race on the Malili River.
Dozens were plunged into the river as the one-week-old bridge collapsed.
“The dead victim was Nabang, 5 years old. Another person is reportedly missing,” Lalu Murna, the head of Wewa Ngriu village, where the bridge was located, told the Indonesian news portal detik.com on Wednesday.
“It’s a new bridge; we haven’t even inaugurated it,” he added. “The construction was only finished a week ago.”
The boat race was halted shortly after the incident, as participants and bystanders helped pull victims from the water.
East Luwu is located some 500 kilometers away from the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar.
