The West Jakarta District Court on Wednesday sentenced Afriani Susanti to another four years in jail for drug use, on top of the 15 years she is currently serving for causing an accident that led to the deaths of nine pedestrians.
Afriani, 29, was sentenced in August to 15 years in jail for killing nine pedestrians after she swerved off a road near the Tugu Tani monument in Central Jakarta on Jan. 22.
“The defendant has been proven guilty of abusing drugs… [The defendant] is sentenced to four years in jail,” presiding judge Maswandi said, as reported by Indonesian news portal Detik.com.
According to prior police reports, Afriani admitted to taking Ecstasy at Stadium, a night club in West Jakarta, and drinking at a disco in Kemang, South Jakarta, the night of the accident. Police said she was driving her Daihatsu Xenia at speeds in excess of 90 kilometers per hour.
The sentence is greater than the prosecution’s demand of three years. The judges gave Afriani a longer sentence due to her non-cooperative behavior and misleading statements.
“Afriani has been convincingly proven guilty of using narcotics,” prosecutor Tamalia Roza told the court at a hearing in November. “[We] ask the judges to hand down a three-year prison sentence.”
Afriani said on Wednesday that she would appeal the four-year sentence.
“Humans are unfair even to themselves, let alone the law to the people. Obviously, with this verdict, I will appeal,” Afriani told reporters.
(She should thank her lucky stars she did not get life imprisonment, unfair treatment she reckoned, how unfair was it when she caused the demise of nine
innocent people while she was sloshed to the gills with booze and under the influence of ecstacy as wel, the ruddy cheek of that woman!) siK.
