Residents of Pematang Padu subdistrict, Mandau district, Bengkalis regency in Riau province have been living in fear as wild elephants roam around residential areas in the evening.
The elephants have damaged three houses.
“They usually damage anything in their way, including the electricity pole. They are looking for plants,” said Elfi, whose semipermanent house was damaged.
Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) employee Nanang said the center has yet to decide on what action it would take.
“For the time being, we suggest that people keep their distance from the animals,” she said
