Bogor. A West Java court on Wednesday sentenced a Koran recitation teacher who sexually molested 13 of his students to eight years in prison.
A panel of judges found 48-year-old Nana Suryana, from Wanaherang village in Bogor, guilty of violating Article 81 of the 2002 Law on Child Protection.
“One of the aggravating factors is the fact that he is a Koran recital teacher who should have protected the children, but instead he ruined their futures and violated them,” judge Loise Betty Silitonga told the Cibinong District Court on Wednesday. Loise was joined on the panel by judges C.H. Retno and Sri Sulastri.
Article 81 stipulates that anyone who intentionally forces a minor to have sexual intercourse with that person, or with anyone else, could face up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp 60 million ($6,200).
The judges sentenced Nana to eight years in prison and ordered him to pay the maximum Rp 60 million fine.
Nana was arrested by Bogor Police in August of last year. The defendant admitted to molesting 13 children over the past two years, with the victims’ ages ranging from 5 to 9 years old. In the case of the 9-year-old child, Nana reportedly offered her Rp 2,000 after the act.
Police said he also threatened her, warning her not to tell anybody about the incident. The case was first revealed after the parents of the 9-year-old reported the teacher to police. The mother said she had learned about the molestation from the victim’s younger sister.
Before the judges on Wednesday, Nana said he deeply regretted his actions and accepted the consequences.
