Sixteen people were killed and 58 others sustained injuries after tourism bus Mustika Mega Utama’s driver lost control on curving roads in Ciloto, Puncak, Cianjur regency, West Java, this morning. In the accident, the bus hit a steep mountain-side after the driver’s brakes gave way and he was no longer able to stop.
West Java police spokesman, Martinus Sitompul, said on Wednesday that the accident, which took place at 11:30 a.m., began when the bus driver that brought 75 passengers from Bogor to Cianjur lost control of the bus and it rammed into the cliff.
“Twenty six passengers sustained serious injuries and 32 had minor wounds. Several injured victims are receiving medical treatment at Cimacan General Hospital in Cianjur,” said Martinus, via text messages.
The tourists were leaving Bogor to make a devotional visit to a sacred place in Cikundul, Cianjur when the accident occurred. When passing through Jl.Raya Puncak the driver suddenly lost control of the bus and it slammed into the cliff on the left side of the road at a high speed.
The Bogor police precinct’s head of traffic management unit, Adj.Comr.Edwin Affandi, said traffic on Jl.Raya Puncak was at a standstill due to the accident, which took place at Kampung Parabon, Ciloto village, Cipanas.
“Traffic jams reaching up to 4 kilometers are being experienced in Jl.Raya Puncak, starting from the location of the accident to Puncak Pass,” Edwin said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
“We from the Bogor police precinct are trying to accommodate the traffic to stop the congestion getting worse,” he added.
As evacuations were still underway, Edwin said that big trucks and minivans should take alternative routes to avoid traffic jams.
“For the moment, big trucks and minivans are not allowed to pass through Jl.Raya Puncak. We will prioritize small vehicles such as motorcycles and private cars,” he said.
On Feb.23, an accident took place on the route connecting Cianjur and Sukabumi, West Java. Most of the victims were local residents, who were standing at the side of the road when the accident took place.
