Prosecutors demanded an eight-month suspended sentence for the son of Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa for causing a traffic accident in that killed two and injured three others.
“The defendant has been proven guilty of ignorance which caused the victims’ death, as well as injuring other victims and damaging their assets,” prosecutor Teuku Rahman told the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday in reference to Rasyid Rajasa.
Teuku said that prosecutors called for Rasyid to be handed 12 months probation and pay a Rp 12 million ($1,240) fine, though Rasyid immediately responded to the demand by saying that he and his lawyers would file an appeal.
Prosecutors previously claimed that during the early hours of Jan. 1, a BMW X5 luxury sport utility vehicle driven by Rasyid rammed into a Luxio van at high speed on a highway, killing two of the van’s passengers and injuring three others.
Rasyid had been celebrating New Year’s and stayed up all night, but tested negative for drugs and alcohol, police said.
He has been allowed to remain at home while prosecutors put the case together.
The primary indictment charges Rasyid with driving a vehicle in a way that caused an accident resulting in someone’s death, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
He is also being indicted for reckless driving resulting in injuries and damage to other vehicles, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and Rp 10 million in fines.
(And that for causing the death of two people and injuring others not even talking about the damage he caused! siK.)
