Pasar Baru to pilot new parking system
Motorists will soon pay for a parking space for the exact period of time as the Jakarta administration plans to introduce a new on-street parking system.
Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahja Purnama said on Monday that the system was applied in Hungary, Colombia, the United Kingdom and China, among other countries, where motorists pay at a machine and enter their license plate number and the number of hours they will park there.
He said parking attendants, hired by the Transportation Agency and paid a Rp 2.5 million (US$256) monthly salary, would verify the data submitted by motorists.
"We will try this system in Pasar Baru [Central Jakarta] as a start. The technology will later be used in all parking spots across Jakarta," he said.
Basuki said the administration would not spend any money on the installment of the system, but would get private firms to invest in it.
He said the administration was likely to involve banks so that motorists could pay their parking fees through mobile banking or with an ATM card. "[Payment] can also be done through mobile phones by texting," he said.
