City targets 2.3 million foreign visitors this year

Fikri Zaki Muhammadi, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Jakarta | Fri, May 03 2013, 11:14 AM

The Jakarta Tourism Agency is optimistic that the 2.3 million foreign arrivals targeted this year will be realized, saying that the capital had prepared various cultural and unique events that would entice tourists to come.

Agency chief Arie Budhiman said on Thursday that various studies by travel advisers suggested that Asia-Pacific countries were the top tourism destinations, especially East and Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia.

“By putting all efforts on promotion and staging unique events, we will surely see many more foreign tourists coming here,” he told The Jakarta Post.

Arie said the agency would conduct many more world-class cultural events, attractions that foreigners would find only in Jakarta.

He cited the Jakarta Night Festival, the Jakarta Marathon and the upcoming Islamic Solidarity Games as examples.

“Promotion should be more aggressive than in previous years, of course,” he said, adding that potential visitors originated from Southeast Asian countries, East Asia and the Middle East.

According to data released by the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) on Wednesday, about 550,000 foreign tourists visited Jakarta from January to March, a 10.69 percent increase from the same period last year.

In March alone, around 192,000 foreigners visited Jakarta. The number is lower only to that of Bali with 247,000 people, the BPS revealed.

Although admitting that business travelers accounted for most of the number, Arie was optimistic that promotion campaigns would help make Jakarta a top world destination.

The city administration has spent Rp 87 billion (US$8.93 million) on promoting Jakarta to foreign tourists.

“With the country’s increasing economic growth, businesspeople will come. But they will also be interested in visiting Jakarta for other purposes,” he stressed. “Various annual and big events will become our strengths.”

Yet, Jakarta still faces several weaknesses, including its residents’ inability to communicate in foreign languages.

The latest Globe Shopper Index released by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Switzerland-based Global Blue reveals that Jakarta ranks midway to the top among 35 top shopping destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, with its solid reputation for affordability.

In the index, Jakarta ranks 17 with a score of 46 out of 100, only a few points behind Mumbai and above Osaka. Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai made the top three.

The index reveals that Jakarta is chosen for affordability, yet still lags behind in the use of foreign languages.

On this matter, Arie said that all stakeholders should believe that funding for tourism was an investment rather than a cost.

“Stakeholders should believe that it has a huge multiplier effect. What they spend will return in a higher amount,” he said.

As for the agency, Arie said that it conducted language and hospitality training and certification for businesspeople. Yet, the latter’s investment in this had yet to be optimal, he added. “Beside promotions and events, shopping centers are also an attraction for tourists,” Arie said.

“That’s why the construction of new malls shouldn’t be objected to, as long as it does not violate spatial planning.”
