Mount Halimun Salak National Park’s authority permitted Russian Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company to conduct a survey for the evacuation of the wreckage of a Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft, which crashed on Mount Salak, Bogor, West Java, a year ago.
“We issued a permit but the coverage under the permit is only for a survey because we await details on the evacuation,” said the national park head Agus Priambudi, on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Agus said if the evacuation had the potential to damage the national park ecosystem, the permit could be cancelled unless another technique, which would not inflict damage or annoyance to plants and animals, could be found.
“The wreckage evacuation would not be an easy task because it is located on a cliff,” said Agus.
A Sukhoi RRJ-95B aircraft with flight number RA 36801 was on its second of two scheduled demonstration flights on May 9, 2012, before it went missing at 2:33 p.m. Jakarta time.
The crash killed all 45 people on board, 35 Indonesian passengers, eight Russian crew and two passengers from the US and France. (asw/ebf)
